Star Wars Lightsaber Colors

There’s much to discover regarding the weapons used by Jedi and Sith in Star Wars, such as lightsabers. From what determines its color to understanding what significance lies behind its blade, there are various elements you should consider when creating your customised lightsaber.

lightsaber color choicesHere is a breakdown of all of the lightsaber color choices found within Star Wars canon and what each one stands for:

Red

Red is the darkest of lightsaber color choices and symbolises evil, Sith-style forces. This hue has long been associated with characters like Count Dooku, Darth Maul, Kylo Ren, and other dark Jedi in both canon and Legends; moreover, it’s also used by Jedi who has fallen to its Dark side, such as Barriss Offee (passed down from Anakin Skywalker to Luke).

Red-bladed lightsaber hilts tend to feature an orange tint that symbolises the warmth and energy of the Force. At the same time, those who use one often display signs of haste and impatience while seeking control and showing excessive vanity and narcissism.

Jedi lightsaber hilts typically feature natural crystals with unique properties for their hilts; their colours depend on these crystals’ properties. When Sith or other evil Force users cannot forge an unseen connection with natural crystals, they create synthetic ones in red, which end up turning out this way; this explains why Count Dooku, Darth Maul, and Kylo Ren all wield red-bladed lightsabers while some Jedi such as Mace Windu has been seen carrying purple blades within both canon and Legends stories.

Purple

In the Expanded Universe (which no longer adheres to Disney’s Star Wars universe), purple lightsabers symbolised harmony between the light and dark sides of the Force, representing Mace Windu as someone with equal mastery of both forms of combat.

Purple Sabers were first made known in the prequel trilogy by Mace Windu (portrayed by actor Samuel L. Jackson ). Mace requested this unique blade colour from director George Lucas and was granted it; its use symbolised his mastery over the light and dark sides of the Force and inner conflict.

Red is associated with passion and power, so it is no surprise that Sith characters like Darth Vader, Count Dooku, Kylo Ren, and Ahsoka Tano (and later Asajj Ventress) frequently wear red to represent themselves on-screen. Additionally, Mandalorian warriors such as Jango Fett prefer it too!

Cyan

Cyan is an elegant colour that represents tranquillity, water, and spirituality. Yoda and Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Masters who revere it most of all, often used this hue in their attire, which also stands for growth and nature.

Silver lightsabers are rare and signify purity and peace, often seen with Jedi Temple guards like Asajj Ventress, Ahsoka Tano, and Plo Koon, and one from Legends named Corran Horn. Silver also represents the Durindfire crystal found on the Ilum ice planet.

Cal Kestis of Star Wars: Fallen Order utilises a cyan-bladed lightsaber, symbolising hope and new beginnings while at the same time representing ambition, power, and even an inversion from the dark to light sides of life.

Green

Green symbolises intelligence, its relationship to nature, wisdom, and peace – qualities Jedi personified like Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda, who wielded this colour with great skill to promote peace in their galaxy and preserve order.

Yellow symbolises strength and justice. Robed masked Jedi Temple guards were often dressed in yellow to represent this attribute as they protected their temple against threats while other Jedi Knights and Masters ventured on missions of greater danger. Their double-bladed lightsabers expressed their dedication and commitment.

Magenta has not been widely seen in Star Wars media (other than Jedi: Fallen Order), yet it could appear in future movies or live-action projects. It has a brighter hue than blue or purple. It could symbolise passion and ambition – perfect for characters like Jyn Erso, who demonstrate courage and wisdom alongside compassion and empathy.

Blue

Blue and green lightsaber colours were once widely popular in Star Wars. This trend could be traced to their association with serenity and growth and an individual more physically connected with the Force – characteristics associated with Jedi Guardians.

However, as the galaxy has expanded, so have our options for lightsaber blade colour. Thanks to Star Wars transition into an Expanded Universe and games such as Jedi Fallen Order, seven unique colours of lightsaber blades are now featured within its canon.

Blue, representing peace and purity among Jedi, is the most commonly worn lightsaber color choice. Combative guardians such as Qui-Gon Jinn and Master Yoda choose blue as their guardian colour, thus making it one of the more popular choices among players in recent series incarnations. One rarer choice among rare colours is cyan – symbolising wisdom and calmness – worn only once by Mace Windu, who represents the balance between light and dark; as such, it could also serve Temple guards well if worn as such colour.
